Tips To Being A Freelance Travel Writer

By Sarah Hughes

For those who love to write and for those who love traveling to various places around the globe, there is a great opportunity to take. These days, there is a high demand for travel writers because of the presence of many blogs and websites that delve into this subject matter. If one wants to take this road to become a freelance travel writer, then here are a few tips to help.

Now, if one wants to become a writer in this caliber, then he will need really good writing skills and some credibility. The best way to do so is to get a job first in a magazine or in an advertising field to gain experience first. The purpose here is to hone the skills and to also gain some credentials as a writer.

From here, there are two paths to go into wherein he can offer his services to clients as a freelancer. With this, he may agree with the client that his trips will be subsidised. The other option is for him to go independent and make a travel blog or website of his own and subsidise his own travel.

If he decides to go with the second option and become independent, then he must find a way to finance his trip. One option is to get an investor or a financier who is willing to invest in this kind of venture. Another option is to save up for a trip and start out small in more affordable place.

If one has decided which of the two paths to take, the next thing to do is visit the places. When visiting places, it is very important for one to discover his niche. For clients, his niche will give the clients an idea as to why they would hire him as a writer and as for readers, readers will see him as a one stop place to view everything related to his own traveling niche.

Of course, there is always the choice for one to simply become a writer by being good at researching about different places and writing about them. However, research can only get one so far as nothing beats writing about actual traveling experience. In travels, one should always remember to carry a travel journal since this is where he will be writing all his notes and interesting stuff for his work.

When he gets back from his travels, then he must already get started to work on his material. If he is a freelancer for clients, then he does not need to worry too much about marketing and promotion since the client will do all of that. If one has his own website though, then he has to do his own marketing.

Basically, these are some of the things that one has to do if he wants to get into this sort of field. Now, do take note that it doing this sort of thing is quite tiring because of the traveling involved but if one really enjoys this, then it should be no issue. It is like combining work and pleasure at the same time.
