Analyzing How Collective Empowerment Works

By Daniel Turner

The best way to truly push for a movement to work is to simply empower each individual as a collective when it comes to the sole purpose of a movement. This is also known as the phenomenon of collective empowerment and it runs on the concept of power from high numbers. Here are some things to think about when analyzing this phenomenon.

One is probably familiar with movements not only on television but also on social media and on the internet. There are certain groups each with their own advocacy such as the environmentalist group, the animal rights group, the anti racial discrimination group and many more. If one observes, one thing in common that they have with each other would be the fact that the individuals in the group have a single interest.

However, most people will not have much clout to make that difference if he or she is by himself. In general, humans fear rejection and may also fear being ridiculed by opposition if there is no one else out there with support. By being in a group though, one can significantly become more empowered simply because he or she feels there are others out there who can act as support.

This is, in fact, the driving force behind most riots or street protests. One of the most recent examples would be the 2019 Hong Kong rally wherein a large number of young Hong Kong protesters stood against the bill allowing extradition from China. They stood outside of the parliament, blocked certain roads in the city and protested against their government.

Their unity as a whole not only came from the strong feelings the people had toward the bill but also through the sheer numbers they were able to collect for the rally. Because of the numbers, the people who participated in the rally actually drew power from each other for the singular cause. That is one of the finest examples of having strength in big numbers.

That said, the collective empowering of people is not just limited to political and social movements. It can also apply to certain interests and passions that one may have. By joining a group of people that share the same passion, one can be more empowered to further pursue the passion as there are people who encourage.

If one is into a particular art form that no one else around him or her does not seem to be interested in, then he or she will not really be that empowered to really pursue it. But if one finds a group of people that actually have the same interest as he or she does, then he or she will obviously be more encouraged to pursue the art form since many others share the passion.

The empowering of a collective is an extremely powerful thing, especially if the group grows in size and many individuals stay loyal to it. If one is part of a group that empowers its people, then one will also feel a power for the cause of the group. So one can imagine if all of the members in the group or the community feel exactly the same way to the point that they feel they can move mountains.
