Using Young Adult Book Reviews

By Rosella Campbell

When they are young children usually love stories. Reading them before bedtime is a good way to get them to relax. As they get older they then start discovering stories for themselves. The problem comes past the age of eleven and into the teenage years when reading starts to seem more like a chore rather than something that can be fun and enjoyable. This is where young adult book reviews can come in handy!

The first thing to say is that young adult is not a genre in and of itself. People who hear this term may think of certain types of story. However this does not necessarily have to be the case. In reality there is a wide array of genres for young readers to choose from that could be suitable for them.

The thing to remember is that young adult in and of itself is not a genre. A wide range of authors have written for stories for younger readers. Indeed many of them are enjoyed by older readers as well and ultimately there is no age limit on a story that is well written and engages the reader.

However this does not necessarily mean that a YA story has to be realistic. Indeed a lot of the most successful titles have been based in the supernatural, fantasy or science fiction genres. Furthermore many of the stories have often had appeal for adults with many stories providing a good balance of well crafted story with elements of humour and satire.

Another issue is that a lot of the most successful YA titles have been aimed at girls. This is often because there is less of an issue with girls reading that there is for boys. Finding a title that they can engage with is not always easy and for a parent getting boys in their teenage years to read can often be a challenge.

This is why reviews are useful. The type of review you need will depend on the information you want. For example there are plenty of websites that can tell you about the content of a story and whether or not that particular type of story is suitable for your children to read.

It is also worth looking at several different sites when comparing viewpoints. This will allow you to get a broader sense of how well a particular title is rated. Be wary as some less scrupulous authors and companies may put in fake reviews. However these are often easier to spot. The best ones tend to be neither overly critical or overly gushing with praise.

You can find reviews on a number of websites. It is recommended you go on a number of different ones as this will make it easier to compare what is available and what will be most appealing to your children. The important thing to remember is that while they are growing up reading needs to be seen as something that can be done for pleasure and not just something that has to be done for schoolwork!
