A Bride's Guide to Working With Independent Wedding Dress Designers

By Jose Evans

A woman's wedding day can be a time when dreams come true. Many brides think long and hard about what they will wear when they walk down the aisle. When it comes time to find a dress, however, they may not find something that measures up to their vision. Independent wedding dress designers can help bring a woman's vision to life. Working with a designer can be a bit different than visiting a bridal salon. Here is what to expect if you do decide to have a custom gown on your big day.

You do need to make some decisions before finding a designer. This is no different than if you were going to a salon to choose your outfit. A designer will often ask you how formal your event will be, when you are getting married and where the ceremony and reception will take place. Having the answers to these questions can help make the communication process as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Of course, designers don't work for free. You should expect to pay more for a custom gown than you would for an off the rack dress from a salon. A designer may put a massive amount of work into creating a wedding gown. A dress will often use very expensive fabrics and beading and other embellishments may also take time to put on. There may also be costs for creating sketches as well. Knowing how much you can afford to spend will help you save time and energy when looking for a designer.

It can be helpful for you to know what kind of gown you are looking for. Brides should be willing to keep an open mind, however, and a good designer should be able to get a feel for what you want while ensuring a design is as flattering as possible.

When talking to a designer, you may find that they have several different ways of coming up with your basic dress. Some will have different styles of top and bottom that you can try on. Once you know which ones you like best the designer can then mesh them together. You can pick the material and other design details as well. Others will create custom sketches and the gown will be created using that sketch.

Another good tip is to start working with a designer quite some time before your big day. Every step of the design process takes time. You don't want the designer to rush when making your gown. You also want to make sure it is properly fitted so that you look your best when you walk down the aisle.

Of course, not every city will have independent designers. Even if there is a seamstress in your town or city they may not design clothing. Also, bridal garments can be quite specialized and not every designer will have experience working in this area.

Taking the time to get a custom gown can really pay off. You will walk down the aisle in an outfit that has never been worn by anyone else. Since it is your design and yours alone you won't have to worry about anyone else wearing the same gown as you are.
